Retinal Detachment

What is Retina?

It is the innermost layer of the eye responsible for vision.

What is Retinal Detachment? (R.D)

It is the separation of retina from the other layers of eye.

Who are at Risk?

  • Patients with family history of R.D
  • Preterm babies
  • Patients with presence of holes/tears in their Retina
  • Birth defects in the Retina
  • Patients with advanced Diabetes Mellitus
  • Patients with high minus power(MYOPES)
  • Following inflammation/infection of the eye
  • Any injury to the eye
  • Tumours affecting the inner layer of the eye

Symptoms

  • Sudden loss or blurring of vision manifesting as partial or complete loss of visual field
  • Sudden appearance of numerous blackspots
  • Flashes of light occurring on their own following injury

The diagnosis is made with the help of

  • Indirect ophthalmoscope with 20D lens and scleral indentation
  • Slit lamp bio microscope with 78 D and 90 D lens
  • Ultra sound scan (A&B)

Treatment

For tears/breaks in the retina
  1. Cryotherapy
  2. Photocoagulation using slit lamp delivery or indirect ophthalmoscope
  3. Surgery-Sub retinal fluid drainage, Scleral buckling and Vitrectomy

Pneumoretinopexy- is an out patient procedure wherein an expanding gas bubble is used to seal a retinal break and reattach the retina without scleral buckling.

Facilities available in our hospital

  1. Indirect ophthalmoscope with 20D lens and scleral indentation.
  2. Slit lamp bio microscope with 78D and 90D lens.
  3. Ultra sound scan (A&B)
  4. The sophisticated Vitrectomy machine is used for complicated surgeries like removing blood from inside the eye, removing the foreign body from the eye, and for complicated retinal detachments.
  5. Carl Zeiss Operating Microscope, One of the world's best microscope from Germany is used for all Vitreoretinal procedures.
  6. Rajan Eye Care is the one of the few centers in India to use the BIOM (Binocular Indirect ophthalmic Microscope) to visualize the retina during surgery.
  7. The institute is also equipped with Endo illuminator, Endo laser, and micro vitreous instrumentation.
  8. For Pneumoretinopexy, the frequently used sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and perfluoropropane (C3F8) are available at Rajan Eye Care Hospital.
